How to Host a "Pass the Flowers" Mahjong Party: A Beautiful Afternoon of Games, Friendship, and Florals

How to Host a "Pass the Flowers" Mahjong Party: A Beautiful Afternoon of Games, Friendship, and Florals

We've all heard "Never Pass a Flower" in Mahjong, but we decided to turn that advice on its head this year with our latest mahjong party that we've deemed "Pass the Flowers!" Here's how it works, each guest brings a flower arrangement with them and then gets to choose a new arrangement to take home at the end of the party--kind of like a springtime version of a white elephant exchange.

The afternoon started with a light lunch, perfectly executed by our hostess, Ana. We then moved into mahjong gameplay. As each player mahj'ed for the first time of the day, she got to select a flower arrangement to bring home. At the end, any players who had not mahj'ed yet, got a chance to pick an arrangement too, so no-one was left out!

Hosting a "Pass the Flowers" mahjong party is a delightful way to blend friendly competition with a touch of elegance. This unique gathering combines the joy of mahjong with the beauty of fresh flowers, as each guest arrives with a floral arrangement and leaves with a new bouquet chosen as they win their first hand. Paired with a thoughtfully curated menu, this afternoon soiree is sure to be a hit.

As always, we're here to make hosting a breeze, so here is a complete guide to throwing your own Pass the Flowers Mahjong Party!

Setting the Scene for Your Pass the Flowers Mahjong Party

  • Tablescape & Decor: Lean into the springtime vibes! Use fresh flowers, pastel table linens, and elegant dishware to set the scene. Place a mix of candles and small floral centerpieces on the dining table to create a visually appealing space.
  • Mahjong Setup: Ensure each table is ready with a full mahjong set, racks, and comfortable seating. If you have players of mixed experience levels, provide a quick-reference guide or assign a mentor to newer players.
  • Floral Display Area: Designate a beautiful spot for guests to place their brought flower arrangements. As each player wins their first mahjong of the day, they can select a bouquet to take home, adding an exciting incentive to the games. We chose to place a pretty notecard next to each arrangement so that our guests could write their name next to the arrangement they chose.
