If you want to get better at choosing a mahjong hand quickly and confidently… you need solo mahjong practice.
In today’s How to Choose a Mahjong Line series video, I walk you through a full mahjong solitaire practice round using the NMJL card. We start right after the deal, choose a section, and begin the Charleston, just like you would in a real game.
In the hand we’re practicing today: After the first three passes of the Charleston, I realize I haven’t collected anything helpful for the section I originally chose… so I pivot. This happens in real games all the time. And instead of panicking, we talk through how to calmly reassess your tiles, evaluate new possibilities, and switch sections strategically. Pivoting is a real part of mahjong, so let’s practice how and when to pivot.
In this video we cover:
- How to choose a section of the NMJL Card immediately after the deal
- What to pass and what to keep during the Charleston
- When it makes sense to pivot to a new section
- The NMJL rule about never passing jokers during the Charleston
