There is no second place in mahjong!
One of the things that is important to learn as you move from beginner into intermediate and advanced mahjong player is that if you can’t win, your goal should be to not lose. Too often we get focused on what’s going on on our rack only.
But if you want to become a better, stronger, more winning mahjong player, then you need to start to look past your rack so you can keep track of what your opponents are doing. If you cannot win the game, then your goal changes to don’t lose. This may even mean your goal is to force a wall game.
Sometimes if you’re playing defensively, you’re going to want to even break up the tiles you need for your hand to prevent your opponent from winning.
In this video, we walk through some basic strategy for defensive play and ways that you can start to be aware of what your opponents are doing, notice when they’re getting close to winning, and what to do to prevent them from winning.
