How to Choose a Mahjong Hand (Line) | Easy Beginner Strategy for the NMJL Card

One of the most common questions I get about how to play mahjong is how to choose a line (or hand) on the NMJL card. If you’ve ever felt stuck staring at the card after the deal, this video is for you.

My approach is simple: don’t commit to a line right away. Instead of choosing a specific hand immediately after the deal, I start by choosing a section of the card that fits the tiles I’ve been given.

Mahjong is all about pattern recognition. Begin by organizing your tiles by suit and number—this makes it much easier to spot potential patterns and see where your tiles naturally fit.

During the Charleston, focus on collecting tiles that align with your chosen section. As the passes continue, your hand will usually start to reveal itself. Once you’ve built enough momentum toward a specific line, that’s when it makes sense to commit.

As a general rule of thumb, if you have 6–7 tiles working toward one line, that’s typically the hand you should play. This strategy works for beginners and experienced players alike and helps remove a lot of the stress and second-guessing from choosing a mahjong hand.

***A Note: yes, I accidentally dealt myself 15 tiles thinking I had 14. I’ve chosen to still share this video for a few reasons.

  1. I still think this is good practice and good info to help improve your mahjong game.
  2. I don’t think I would have made different choices even if I’d had one fewer tile.
  3. I want to highlight that even “experts” make mistakes in this game! It’s a complicated game and mistakes will happen even when you’ve been playing for a long time—no need to beat yourself up over it! Shuffle up and deal again!
