How to Choose Your Hand in Mahjong | Improve Your Charlestion Strategy

Follow along as we work through a real example of tiles dealt to choose a mahjong line on the NMJL Card.

The best way to improve your mahjong strategy is to get more comfortable with the hands on the card so that you can more confidently choose a hand during the Charleston.

In this practice mahjong hand, we have a few different sections that could work for the tiles dealt. In the end, we choose to play in the Winds and Dragons section. We walk through the full Charleston and how to make choices along the way based on the tiles we recieve in each pass.

To practice this at home:

  1. Grab your tile bag and deal yourself 13 tiles.
  2. Get organized on your rack by sorting tiles by suit and then by number order.
  3. Search the NMJL Card for a section that fits with the tiles on your rack--this is important: choose a section rather than a single hand.
  4. Do a mock Charleston, passing 3 tiles at a time and drawing 3 from your bag. As you get new tiles, try to hone in on a single hand.
