One of my favorite ways to play mahjong is with just one other player! Two player mahjong, also called Siamese mahjong, is a great way to play with your husband or with just one friend it’s a lovely way to get better at Mahjong and a great way to get super comfortable with your National Mah Jongg League card.
When you play two player, Siamese, Mahjong, each player is making two hands at a time. To win in Siamese, you will win both hands at the same time. To set up for 2 Player Mahjong, place two racks in front of each player on opposite sides of the table. Pour your tiles out and turn them face down in the middle of the table. You do not build walls into player mahjong. Each player draws their own tiles from the face down tiles in the middle. One player will draw 27 tiles and the other player will draw 28 tiles. The player with 28 tiles will begin the game with the first discard. In two player mahjong, there is no Charleston, but you can choose to do a courtesy pass with your opponent.
You cannot win until you Mahj both lines on both racks, you may choose to call Mahjong on a single line for one of two reasons:
- You want to lock in your joker exposures so that your opponent cannot joker swap them for the represented Tile.
- You want to call the last Tile needed for mah-jongg on that particular line; maybe you need a single or pair or a group of singles to win and that Tile has been discarded or you’re playing a concealed line, you may call the final Tile for mahjong and declare mahjong on that single rack and then continue until you’ve won the second line to win the game.
