Improve Your Mahjong Strategy with This Simple Solo Mahj Practice to Get Better at Choosing a Hand

This is the best way to improve your mahjong game! This solo mahjong practice can help you get better, faster, and more confident at choosing your hand in mahjong. This is the number one strategy question I get from new and long-time players alike: how do I get batter at know what hand to play?? Here’s how to improve!

Grab your bag of mahjong tiles, and just leave them in the bag. This is your draw bag—you don’t need to set anything else up, though a rack can be handy for keeping tiles organized while you practice.

  1. Draw 13 tiles at random from your bag. This is your practice “deal.”
  2. Get organized! Sort tiles by suit and then in number order. Non-suited tiles, sort them together in the order they’re shown on the Card.
  3. Look for patterns and pick a SECTION! (Not a line).
  4. Start a mock Charleston. Pass 3 tiles off your rack and choose 3 tiles at random from your tile bag.
  5. After each pass, keep what works for your section and pass the rest. After a few passes, start to see what line makes the most sense for your tiles.

Do this a few times a week and you will not only master the National Mah Jongg League Card but you’ll feel much more confident about picking your hand in your next game of mahj!
