In this series, we are deep diving into the question and answer section of the 2026 NMJL newsletter and talking through each question individually.

Question number one: is a joker that was exposed before a hand has been called dead available for redemption?

First, let’s talk through what makes a hand dead in mahjong. Can you declare yourself dead? How do other players declare your hand dead? What does it mean if your hand is dead? Do you still get a turn? In this video we’ll talk through all of that.

You can still do a joker swap for any jokers that were exposed before the hand was called dead. Let’s talk through what’s allowed and what’s not allowed in this particular scenario during a mahjong game.
