Choosing a mahjong hand gets easier with practice and in this video, I walk through a real hand example to show exactly how I choose a line on the NMJL card after the deal.
Mahjong is all about seeing patterns. By sorting your tiles by suit and number, you can quickly recognize which hands are realistic and which ones aren’t worth chasing.
Instead of locking into a specific hand immediately, I start by identifying a section of the card that fits the tiles I’ve been given. This keeps your options open and allows patterns to naturally emerge as you organize your tiles and work through the Charleston. As you make your passes, collect any tile that works for your chosen section and pass anything that doesn’t fit.
As tiles move during the Charleston, you’ll begin narrowing toward one strong line within your chosen section. Once you’re holding around 6–7 tiles that support a single hand, that’s usually the moment to fully commit.
This type of mahjong hand practice is one of the fastest ways to improve your mahjong strategy especially for new players. This is also an excellent practice for learning a new NMJL card, so keep this in mind when the 2026 NMJL Card releases in April!
